Ghana has proudly played host to the 13th High-Level Dialogue on Democracy, Governance and Human Rights, a flagship African Union (AU) event aimed at strengthening democratic values and institutions across the continent.
Held under the auspices of the African Union, the forum brought together eminent African leaders, diplomats, scholars, and civil society actors to deliberate on governance, human rights, and the future of democracy in Africa.
Among the distinguished guests warmly welcomed to Ghana were Her Excellency Sahle-Work Zewde, former President of Ethiopia; His Excellency Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi, former President of Botswana; Her Excellency Joice Mujuru, former Vice President of Zimbabwe; and His Excellency Najla Bouden, former Prime Minister of Tunisia. Their presence highlighted the continental importance of the gathering and the depth of experience brought to the dialogue.
Delivering the keynote address, President John Dramani Mahama, who serves as the African Union’s Champion on Reparations, Gender, and Financial Institutions, urged African leaders to uphold the highest standards of good governance and human rights. He emphasized that Africa’s transformation hinges on bold leadership, democratic accountability, and respect for fundamental freedoms.
“As we accelerate the transformation of our continent, we must commit ourselves to the finest principles of governance and the unwavering protection of human rights,” President Mahama stated.
He further reiterated Ghana’s unwavering commitment to democratic values, noting that the country continues to shine as a beacon of good governance, human rights, and free expression in Africa.
The dialogue reaffirmed the AU’s vision of a united, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, underpinned by democratic ideals and inclusive development.
