The German Embassy in Accra conveyed its condolences to the people of Ghana and music enthusiasts worldwide following the passing of renowned highlife artiste, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, better known by his stage name Daddy Lumba.
The Embassy praised Daddy Lumba’s outstanding contributions to music and culture in a tribute released on Monday, July 28 acknowledging his profound impact and legacy.
The Embassy noted Germany played a pivotal role in shaping Daddy Lumba’s illustrious career.
“It was during his time in Germany in the late 1980s that he transitioned from gospel music into highlife. There, he met fellow Ghanaian musician Nana Acheampong in 1989, and the two formed the famous Lumba Brothers, a group widely credited with popularising Borga Highlife — a genre that blends Ghanaian musical traditions with Western styles, particularly those emerging from the Ghanaian diaspora in Germany.”
The Embassy remarked that Daddy Lumba resided in Cologne and recorded music in Düsseldorf and Monheim am Rhein, collaborating with top German producers during his days in the country.
The Embassy added that his song “Homeless” notably included German phrases, reflecting the cross-cultural influences that shaped his music and life.
“We honour his artistic excellence and celebrate the enduring cultural connections he helped build,” the statement from the Embassy read.
Daddy Lumba died on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at age 60.
