A section of Ghanaians on social media have criticised former Finance Minister, Mohammed Amin Adam after claiming the previous NPP administration did not implement the betting tax.
They have further called for a probe into the erstwhile government’s collection of the revenue generated from the 10% betting withholding tax.
The call comes after former Finance Minister, Dr. Amin Adam claimed that the Akufo-Addo administration did not implement the 10% betting withholding tax.
His comment was in reaction to the Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson’s statement that government will abolish the betting tax.
The Karaga MP while addressing the media in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11 said “Ladies and Gentlemen, betting tax that they said they had abolished, we never collected betting tax. We never implemented the betting tax so to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that was never implemented is to deceive the people of Ghana.”
Dr. Amin Adam’s comment has been met with a barrage of backlash on social media particularly when members of the previous government have consistently promised to abolish the betting tax.
In addition, the previous NPP administration in 2024 said government raked in GHS1.2 billion revenue from the betting tax.
In light of all these, bettors and some Ghanaians who have experienced deductions from their bet winnings have questioned the whereabouts of the deducted taxes, urging a swift investigation into the matter.
One comment read: “Investigations must start immediately, whoever took those monies must return it to affected persons.”
Another person added: “So who was taking the betting tax ? I think this is another area of interest the ORAL team should be investigating.”
“Chairman be guided where were the deductions of the bet winnings going?” a user wrote.
“But you his government promised to abolish it. Npepee wanted to abolish what is not implemented oooo. 38.2% was too generous for these people,” another user stated.
