Chairmen of various parliamentary committees have called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to retain its current leadership in opposition as the party transitions to the Minority in the 9th Parliament.
The MPs argue that maintaining experienced leaders, such as Alexander Afenyo-Markin, as Minority Leader would strengthen the party’s position in Parliament and ensure effective representation, especially given the reduced numbers following the just-ended elections.
Addressing the media in Parliament, the MP for Fanteakwa North, Kwabena Amankwa Asiamah, praised the leadership qualities of Afenyo-Markin and emphasized the need for continuity in the party’s parliamentary leadership.
“Our numbers have drained, and for that matter, we need a front that is experienced to face the enormity of members on the other side,” he said. “We believe it will be beneficial to our caucus, the party, and democracy in Ghana to maintain the current leadership.”

Hon. Asiamah also noted that the current leadership has gained valuable experience from their tenure in the Majority and is well-positioned to navigate the challenges of opposition. However, he acknowledged the need to fill a vacancy left by Hon. Alex Tetteh, who will not return to Parliament.
“We are pleading with our leadership to maintain the statoscope except for one Honourable Alex Tetteh, who has fallen out. Maybe council will decide to fill that gap,” he added.
The call by the committee chairmen underscores internal efforts within the NPP to ensure stability and cohesion as the party adjusts to its new role in the 9th Parliament.
